Created as part of the Army G2’s Every Soldier a Sensor initiative, SLIM-ES3 trains Soldiers in Active Surveillance and Threat Indicator Identification. Produced in only ninety days, this web-delivered application allows the Soldier to navigate a 3-D southwest Asian urban environment, observing and interacting with 2-D photographic “sprites” from official Government photo sources.
Soldiers navigates the urban terrain populated with civilians, security personnel, NGOs, and insurgents, to detect threats while attempting appropriate interaction with everyone encountered. Scoring takes into account objects reported and an Information Operations indicator reflecting success in civilian interactions.
SLIM-ES3 won the Department of Defense 2006 Annual Modeling & Simulation Award for Training and is currently in use as a component of basic training instruction with the First Combat Training Brigade, Fort Jackson and in pre-deployment training for soldiers of the 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, New York.
Developed in cooperation with US Army Intelligence, US Army Research, Development and Engineering Command (RDECOM), the USC Institute for Creative Technologies (ICT), and Warner Bros., Inc.
